Phil
Hawkins
AKA - Screaming Jay Hawkins
Phil Hawkins was known as Screaming Jay Hawkins
when he worked at Y95 in 1976. He, Tedd Webb and Ben Christopher
staged an April Fool's joke on April 1st, 1976 that will never
be forgotten. Hawks took phone calls from an irate listener (Tedd)
who wanted him to play DOA by Blood Rock, a tune obviously not
in the Y95 play list. To make a long story short, during a weather
break, the door knocks and in comes the angry listener with a
copy of DOA. A fight ensues, Hawkins is stabbed (wink-wink), and
listeners rush to the phone to call the cops. Every Police agency
in the Bay area answered the call. Those listening rushed to the
phones before Hawkins could say the magic words "April
Fool". WSML [Graham NC] 1971
