Where Are They Now?

Mike Hennessy

First radio gig 1975 in Niceville, Florida at 1340-WFSH, Fish radio. Worked through college in Tallahassee and after graduating went to WQYK-FM as a night time dj under the name Mike London. Later moved on to 97 WFLA in Tampa and WPAS-AM in Zephyrhills, before landing at WPLP in 1983.

The big break came when Don Richards turned him into a street reporter. After the 1988 purge that turned WPLP into an empty shell, he spent a couple of years in TV at WFLA channel 8 and Channel 62 in Sarasota before going back to 970 WFLA as the overnight anchor, a tenure highlighted by his being assigned to the National Hurricane Center when Hurricane Andrew came in.

After five years at Circuit City as a below average sales person he got back into radio at 970 WFLA in 1999 and finished his master's degree in Mass Communications / Journalism from University of South Florida in 2003.

Serving several hitches for several years at 970 WFLA, and News Director at ZFKY/Rooster 101 and ZFZZ/Z-99 on Grand Cayman Island. Mike says "We've built the best radio news operation this island has ever seen!"

"After survivin' Hurricane Ivan on Grand Cayman, I now claim I'm the only American journalist to have gone through two category 5 hurricanes. The first was Hurricane Andrew at the National Hurricane Center in Miami."

Mike is now back in the Tampa Bay area working part-time at Clear Channel Tampa while still serving as News Director for Z-99 and Rooster 101 in the Cayman Islands. Ah, the wonders of the Internet.

Mike is truly one of the work horses in the business, capable of devoting many hours tracking down a story.
