Larry
MacMillan
Larry started his announcing career at age
19 while in the U.S.A.F at MacDill AFB, Tampa, FL. As most young
people in radio he ran the board for other established announcers
while they took the weekend off or the holidays and it was usually
a night time shift.
His first gig was part time at WTAN AM in
Clearwater Florida. This opportunity came after he was introduced
to Dennison Parker who then owned WTAN through a gentleman who
came to visit the radar squadron at MacDill AFB and asked Larry
to speak to a group of people who he was recruiting to join the
Ground Observer Corp. Twelve people signed up after the meeting
and as a thank you the gentleman asked what Larry would most
like to do after his stint in service.
Having grown up in the Washington D.C. area
he was exposed to the likes of Arthur Godfrey on WTOP and was
a neighbor of Jim Gibbons who had a radio show on WMAL and ended
his career as play by play announcer for the Washington Redskins.
These were Larry’s idols in growing up and were more or
less his inspiration for getting into the radio business. After
three months of training on the board they let Larry loose on
the air and it has been an on and off career since 1957.
The radio exposure led to an opportunity to
do public address work at the Lions Club Speedway in Largo for
Micro Midgets. This led to a 45 year career of Speedway announcing
at 11 different speedways in Florida including Daytona International
Speedway.
