John
DeHaven Started in Radio 1963 in Dayton, Ohio doing
whatever at WKET-FM (long dead), First full time commercial gig
at WKOY, Bluefield, WV in 1965, then to WKGN Knoxville same year.
Then onward to the United States Armed Forces Radio / TV Network
(not by choice, remember the draft??) The G.I. Bill allowed John to attend college
at Ohio University, then at Athens, OH studying Telecom-munications.
While there he worked for University owned WOUB-AM/FM. Next stop WILZ, St. Petersburg Beach (Station
was run by all of the old WCWR people). After a few months returned
to Ohio and worked PM drive at WRFD, Columbus then returned to
Tampa Bay for the next 15 years working WFLA, WDAE, WQYK, WYNF,
96 Fever and a couple other tea pots. John says "On April
5, 1982 (my 36th birthday)... Me, myself and I changed the format
of Country Music legend WHBO 1050am to AM 105, Tampa Bays Oldies
Station." He returned to Ohio in January 1988 to program
a pitiful country station for a few years and then on to news
/ talk radio until retiring from radio on July 4, 1997. John DeHaven
still lives on in Tampa Bay with John DeHaven II, his son, playing
lead guitar in bands along the beach on the weekends. He says "The only air stuff I do now is
voice over for many television spots in the Dayton market. I also
am an information broker." |
