Richards
One of the most respected
news personalities in America. Don came to town as News Director
of WPLP in its heyday. He was a mainstay at the station at the
time of Bob Lassiter, David Fowler and Jay Marvin.
The folding of WPLP brought Don to Newsradio
WFLA in the late 80s, and he has been there ever since serving
as News Director.
Don is an Army veteran, with roots in New England.
He is very fond of UCONNs basketball successes. He has 2
daughters with his wife Ginger.
His big moment in the national spotlight came
when 2 Tampa cops were gunned down by Hank Earl Carr. Don interview
the killer while he was on the run, while he was holding a hostage
at a gas station. He handled the situation like the pro he is,
garnering great accolades from others in the news business.
Update 6/6/2008 - Late Breaking News:
Former Newsradio 970 WFLA News Director Don Richards passed away on Friday, June 6th 2008 after a battle with lung cancer.
He had been ill since October. He wanted to see his only grandchild born before he died. Megan was born yesterday, in Gainesville. Don’s wife, Ginger took pictures of the baby and rushed right back. He saw them this morning, went right to sleep and never woke up again.
