Chuck
Borris Chuck was a 15 year old genius guitar player
when he hooked up with Dennis Pupello, Artie Alvarez, Onelio
Ochoa, and Manuel Gutierrez to form “The Fabulous Rockers”,
a Tampa band in the late 50s. The Rockers played all around the
Bay area and state of Florida, drawing a huge following, and
one of the favorites in the band was the lead guitar player Chuck
Borris.
Borris was an incredible talent, capable of
learning fast, and he could improvise with the best. Chuck was
a talented song writer and singer, two talents the rockers failed
to exploit. Chuck played guitar on the Rocker’s only 45
record “Would I Still Be Loving You”.
In the early 1970s, Chuck, a solo act now
for several years, teamed with Ernie Harwell, the Hall of Fame
announcer of the Detroit Tigers fame, and also an accomplished
song writer. The duo of Borris and Harwell collaborated on many
songs, some which were sung by hit makers like Dionne Warwick,
Marvin Gaye, B.J. Thomas and other huge acts of the day.
Borris was so good a singer/song writer, Scepter
Records signed him to a contract, and he went on to record several
45s for the label. Several of those songs were Borris/Harwell
compositions.
In 1996, The Rockers staged a reunion concert,
and Chuck came in from Idaho to play with his long lost friends.
The concert was a sellout, fans came back to recapture the rapture,
to hear the band that created their childhood memories, The Fabulous
Rockers, and especially that incredible guitar player, Chuck
Borris. They rented buses from as far away as Miami to make the
show. Nothing of that nature had ever been experienced by a local
band.
